Penplotter and Oscilloscope

This week we experimented with the pen plotter and the oscilloscope:

Penplotter

The image used to plot the points is from the program on p5js last week. Firstly we had to download Axidraw and Inkscape software that worked with the penplotter. We were introduced to the technical wiki where we could find tutorials and steps for technical problems and instruments, using that to set up our software for use. The class drew their p5js creation by connecting their devices to the pen plotter.

Oscilloscope

A device is connected to the oscilloscope and a drawing pad is opened up on the device. We had to play around with the buttons and switches on the oscilloscope intending to repeat what was drawn on the device pad on the oscilloscope screen in wave format. This was only done on one device as the process would have been the same on any laptop.

Process

Here are some images showcasing the process:

Outcome

This is my image from the pen plotter

Evaluation

It was interesting to have a practical during office hours, it allowed us to see the effects of hardware in addition to software, which we have been working with so far. It was also the first time we got to work with technical equipment in class so we were all engaged.

However, my image did come out a little bit distorted. My shapes were originally squares layered on top of each other, the results that came out were more curved and sometimes even circles. The Inkscape settings and canvas modifications were completed by my lecturer as we were unfamiliar, but there was not enough time left to make modifications to my creation. Hence the distortion, but time was the limit here, not skill.

Lecture

The lecture introduced me to the concept of copyleft art licence, as well as the movement for open art. There was an introduction to many portfolios, websites and communities that advocated for free information.
